Superintendent Adrienne A. Harris of the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has proposed new guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by licensed insurers in New York State. The guidelines aim to ensure that AI in insurance does not perpetuate discrimination or unfair practices against consumers. The circular letter outlines the expectations for insurers in developing and managing the integration of external consumer data, AI systems, and predictive models to mitigate potential harm to consumers. The DFS is seeking comments from the industry and public on the proposed circular letter until March 17, 2024.
