This feature, currently available to Android and iOS users in the U.K. and Australia, enables listeners to input prompts such as “relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season” or “a playlist that makes me feel like the main character.” These prompts can be based on various themes like locations, animals, activities, and more.
The process involves Spotify utilizing large language models to understand user intent and personalization technology that takes into account the listener’s history and preferences to generate custom AI playlists. The company has safeguards in place to address any inappropriate prompts and continues to enhance its AI capabilities by using third-party tools.
The AI Playlist feature was initially discovered by TikTok users in the Spotify Library App, and it builds on Spotify’s previous release of the Personal DJ feature in 2023, which introduced a virtual DJ powered by AI known as the “Dynamic AI voice Platform.”
To create an AI Spotify playlist, users can open the Spotify mobile app, go to “Your Library,” click on the “+” button, select “AI Playlist,” and input a prompt or choose from suggested ones like “sad music for painting dying flowers” or “tracks for horse riding into the sunset.” Spotify then curates songs based on the prompt, allowing users to preview, remove, and fine-tune the playlist before saving it to their library.
This new AI playlist feature demonstrates Spotify’s commitment to enhancing user experience and delivering personalized music recommendations through innovative AI technology, offering listeners a more tailored and interactive way to discover and enjoy music.
