eBay adds an AI-powered ‘shop the look’ feature to its iOS app

eBay has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “shop the look” on its iOS mobile app targeting fashion enthusiasts. This feature suggests outfit ideas and images based on the customer’s shopping history, incorporating interactive hotspots that reveal similar items and outfit inspirations. The personalized recommendations will evolve as the customer shops more, aiming to show how different fashion items can complement their existing wardrobe.

Powered by eBay.ai and developed in collaboration with the Responsible AI team, “shop the look” includes a mix of preowned and luxury items aligned with the user’s personal style. To access this feature, customers must have viewed at least 10 fashion items in the past 180 days on eBay. It will be visible on the eBay homepage and the fashion landing page.

This addition provides eBay with a fresh way to showcase its extensive inventory and may potentially boost sales. The platform plans to expand this feature to other categories over time while enhancing personalization elements in the future. This move underscores eBay’s commitment to improving the shopping experience and catering to individual preferences.

While eBay ventures into this AI-driven fashion realm, it is not alone as Google and Amazon have also utilized AI to enhance the online shopping experience. Google introduced virtual try-ons for clothes, while Amazon focused on helping customers find the right fit or size. In contrast, eBay’s “shop the look” concentrates on providing fashion inspiration, emphasizing style over fit, which is a more subjective and challenging aspect of shopping.

Initially available on iOS in the U.S. and U.K., “shop the look” will expand to Android later this year. eBay envisions this feature as a valuable tool for fashion-conscious consumers seeking style inspiration and outfit ideas tailored to their tastes.
