Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced that the company will spend billions on AI processors for its artificial intelligence training workloads, with a significant portion earmarked for Nvidia’s AI GPUs. The company is also considering hardware from AMD, which offers various AI accelerators.
A data center full of Tesla’s Dojo processors is projected to cost $500 million and will be utilized for computer vision, video recognition processing, and machine learning. Meanwhile, the company is set to invest more than $500 million on Nvidia hardware this year. Musk emphasized that the stakes for being competitive in AI are at least several billion dollars per year.
AMD’s offerings for AI, including the Instinct MI200, Instinct MI250, and Instinct MI300X accelerators, as well as the Instinct MI300A accelerated processing unit, appear to be potential contenders in the AI hardware market. According to reported performance numbers, the Instinct MI300X surpasses Nvidia’s H100 80GB in AI and HPC performance, signaling strong competition for Nvidia’s upcoming H200 141GB GPU.
