Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, previously exclusive to Premium+ subscribers on X, is now expanding its availability. The CEO of X announced that Grok will soon be accessible to Premium subscribers, marking a shift in its exclusivity.
Initially, Grok was restricted to users on the top-tier Premium+ subscription, priced at $16 a month (while Premium is $8 a month). Despite some dissatisfaction among Premium+ users losing their exclusive access, this wider rollout aligns with Musk’s recent move to make Grok open source. The version of Grok released as open source on Github is from a pre-training phase in October 2023, meaning it differs from the one accessible to X users.
Musk’s involvement with AI has been complicated, evident in his recent legal dispute with OpenAI, a company he formerly sat on the board for. The lawsuit against OpenAI stemmed from Musk’s claim that the creators of ChatGPT breached their contract by not making their product open source. OpenAI countered this by releasing emails indicating that Musk was informed about the company’s decision to halt public sharing of its work.
