Elon Musk, in a recent tweet, announced that xAI will be open sourcing its Grok chatbot, a move set to take effect this week. The AI assistant is currently exclusively available to Premium+ subscribers on X, but further details regarding the open-sourcing decision remain undisclosed.
This decision by Musk is in line with his previous initiatives to make company knowhow more accessible. In the past, Tesla open sourced its patents, leading to widespread adoption of its electric vehicle charging connector by various car manufacturers. Additionally, X had previously released the code for its “For You” algorithmic feed, although the insights gleaned from it were limited.
By allowing third-party developers and researchers access to Grok’s code, Musk potentially aims to increase adoption of the model and gather valuable feedback for enhancing Grok’s capabilities. This move might also be perceived as a strategic move against OpenAI, a company Musk co-founded, which he recently sued for allegedly deviating from its original non-profit mission and becoming a “closed-source de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft.
OpenAI retaliated by asserting that Musk had proposed merging the company with Tesla under his leadership. Musk’s decision to open source Grok could be viewed as a response to the tensions arising from the lawsuit and also as a means to foster innovation and collaboration within the tech community.
