The Biden administration is utilizing the Defense Production Act to mandate that tech companies inform the Commerce Department when training high-powered AI algorithms, giving the US government access to critical information about sensitive AI projects.
The new rule will require companies to share details about training new large language models and safety testing being conducted on their AI creations, as part of a sweeping White House executive order issued last October.
The Commerce Department is also implementing a requirement for cloud computing providers to inform the government when a foreign company uses their resources to train a large language model, aiming to enhance oversight in AI development.
