OpenAI Struggling to Destroy Onslaught of AI Girlfriends

As fascinating as it is bizarre, the OpenAI GPT Store has become a hotbed for romantically oriented chatbots, despite the company’s strict rules against tools dedicated to fostering romantic companionship or containing sexually explicit content. These AI girlfriends, with provocative names like “Nadia, my girlfriend” and “Your girlfriend Tiffany,” are flouting OpenAI’s guidelines, seemingly unchecked.

The GPT Store also features chatbots with sexual content, ranging from those providing “scientific or educational” information on sexual wellness to ones like “SUCCUBUS – Sexy Enigmatic Woman-Enchanter of Men” and “[Sexy],” which decidedly push the boundaries of OpenAI’s restrictions.

This “AI girlfriend” phenomenon is not unique to OpenAI, with other AI chatbots like Replika also facing controversy around sexual harassment and being banned in certain regions. The emergence of the GPT Store, however, has exacerbated the proliferation of AI companions, raising doubts about whether these unauthorized chatbots can be effectively curbed.
