Nvidia has launched the Earth-2 cloud platform, a pioneering climate digital twin solution aimed at combating the economic losses resulting from extreme weather patterns caused by climate change. The Earth-2 platform, showcased at the Nvidia GTC event in San Jose, features innovative APIs designed to simulate and visualize weather and climate on a global scale, offering enhanced forecasting capabilities and timely alerts to address the challenges posed by climate-related disasters.
Revealed during the keynote by Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, Earth-2 is a software that can operate across various supercomputers, depending on partners’ computational power contributions. The platform leverages advanced AI models and the CorrDiff generative AI model to deliver high-resolution simulations that are 1,000 times faster and 3,000 times more energy-efficient than current numerical models, with a long-term goal of forecasting climate change for decades ahead.
Nvidia’s Earth-2 APIs enable interactive simulations ranging from global atmospheric conditions to local weather phenomena, empowering users to generate real-time forecasts and warnings in seconds. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration has already adopted Earth-2’s diffusion models to enhance typhoon predictions, aiming to reduce casualties through early evacuations.
Moreover, Earth-2 seamlessly integrates with Nvidia Omniverse, offering organizations like The Weather Company the opportunity to enhance their digital twin environments for improved weather analysis and simulation. By utilizing Earth-2 APIs, The Weather Company plans to develop higher-resolution simulations and innovative weather modeling products to enhance weather intelligence services for enterprise clients.
Early adopters of Earth-2 APIs include weather analytics platforms such as Spire and Meteomatics, along with startups exploring climate tech solutions. Powered by Nvidia DGX Cloud, Earth-2 provides accelerated simulation as a service, delivering enhanced performance, energy efficiency, and visualization capabilities for climate and weather solutions.
