Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, has criticized OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT for its shortcomings in writing articles on Wikipedia. Wales called ChatGPT-4 “terrible” and described it as a “mess.” He believes it currently misses important details, provides inaccurate information, and even fabricates sources. Despite these criticisms, Wales suggests that AI tools will continue to support intellectual activities, but it may take at least fifty years for AI to surpass human capabilities.
On a positive note, ChatGPT has been praised for its ability to respond to human emotions. However, there have been concerns about the spread of misinformation by similar AI chatbots through fake news websites. In addition, OpenAI faced internal turmoil with the temporary ousting and subsequent rehiring of its CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman. Wales sees this incident as a lesson for start-ups to prioritize governance and decision-making stability. While Wales remains skeptical of current generative AI models, he is open to the possibility of using AI for Wikipedia if it can help minimize inaccuracies. However, any collaboration would require an AI tool that aligns with Wikipedia’s principles and is freely usable. At present, there are no specific plans in the works for such a partnership.
