A recent study by the U.K.-based Institute for the Future of Work has revealed a concerning trend regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on workplace wellbeing. The study surveyed almost 5,000 individuals and found a negative correlation between quality of life and interaction with newer workplace technologies such as wearables, robotics, AI, and machine learning software. These technologies were linked to feelings of disempowerment, increased insecurity, task intensification, stress, loss of meaning, anxiety, and poorer overall health among workers.
However, not all technologies had adverse effects. Digital information and communication technologies were associated with improved quality of life, while newer and more advanced technologies showed a reduction in wellbeing. Computers and messaging tools emerged as tools that provided workers with more freedom and flexibility.
The business landscape has seen a shift towards utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance productivity by automating repetitive tasks and streamlining processes. Some companies, including tech giant IBM, have even announced plans to replace thousands of jobs with AI technology. In 2023, IBM’s CEO announced intentions to replace roughly 8,000 jobs with technology, starting with back-office functions, particularly in the human resources sector.
